What To Expect

We know you’re reluctant. We know you’re scared. You’ve never visited us for physical therapy before. Here’s some things to know about your visit at RehabAuthority.

Can I receive Physical Therapy services without a Physician’s referral?

  • Most often YES!  Occasionally an insurance company will require its Members to see a Doctor before seeing a PT.  If you think that may be the case with your particular insurance provider, just let us know and we’ll be more than happy to check on that detail for you.  Meanwhile, because Physical Therapists are trained, clinical Experts in assessing and treating musculoskeletal conditions, more often than not you won’t need a referral to see a PT. If your particular problem requires treatment that is outside our expertise, we’ll help you find a qualified Physician or other trained Medical Professional who can help.

What should I expect on my first visit?

  • On your first visit you will be greeted by our Front Office Coordinator who will help you fill out any paperwork required. She will call and check on all of your insurance benefits for you and provide that information in writing. We know that dealing with insurance companies can often be confusing and intimidating. We provide professionally trained staff that will deal with all of these uncertainties for you.
    • If you ever have a question about your services or insurance statement we want to be a resource to help you navigate the insurance world.
  • You will be seen by a licensed Physical Therapist who will discuss the following:
    • Your medical history
    • Your current condition, problems and complaints
    • How your condition is affecting your normal activities
    • Your goals in Physical Therapy
  • Your Physical Therapist will then perform a thorough physical examination designed for your specific problem. This may include:
    • Range of Motion testing of joints
    • Muscle Testing
    • Neurological Screening
    • Special Tests
    • Posture Analysis
    • Palpation (feeling the condition of muscles, joints and bones)
  • Your Physical Therapist will then develop a specific plan based on your unique condition. There is no “one size fits all” treatment plan and we believe strongly that every patient deserves a customized treatment plan for their specific condition.

How long will each treatment last?

  • Typical sessions at RehabAuthority are 45-60 minutes.

What types of treatments will I receive?

  • This is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a Physical Therapist. All too often we see patients who have undergone previous treatment at another clinic and did not achieve the goals they had set. One of the reasons is they often received a “cookie cutter” treatment approach instead of a customized treatment plan. Physical Therapists are notorious for falling in love with one kind of treatment and then providing that one type of treatment to every patient. Although the Physical Therapist might be really good at that one technique that doesn’t mean it is appropriate for all patients!

Can I choose which clinic I go to for Physical Therapy?

  • Definitely. You have every right to choose your clinic and your Physical Therapist. We often see patients who have been told they must see a therapist at their doctor’s office or at the hospital but you have the right to choose where to go for Physical Therapy.

Why should I choose a private practice Physical Therapist?

  • There has been a significant amount of research done on this topic over the years and numerous research studies support that patients seen by private practice PTs:
    • Are more satisfied with their care.
    • Received fewer overall visits (studies showed 39%-45% less visits).
    • Had significantly lower costs for their care (studies showed 30%-40% less).
  • Here’s what one of our Patients had to say on topic:
“So I’ve had 3 prior back surgeries in the early 2000’s. During that time, I had to jump the plethora of hoops prior to surgery. One of the hoops was physical therapy, and needless to say that didn’t work. Recently I was told that I had a bulge in my neck along with some arthritis; specifically the C6/C7 area that was causing narrowing of my nerve area. The issue caused tingling/numbness of my left arm and hand, along with one of the most excruciating burning feelings in my left scapula area. It was recommended that I have a cortizone blast via CT Scan that would be administered with a 12 inch needle! I immediately phoned a friend who had a similar problem. While I was waiting for the shot, he phoned back telling me NOT to have the shot, but to try physical therapy instead. I backed out of the cortizone procedure and went to my Doctor to ask that my physical therapy be done with RehabAuthority. I was extremely skeptical as prior attempts with other PT clinics had failed. Well, I just finished my 4th appointment at RehabAuthority along with a couple weeks of home physical therapy exercises, and I’m proud to say that I’m back to 100%! Thank you RehabAuthority. You made a believer out of me!!”

What kind of education will my Physical Therapist have?

  • Almost all Physical Therapist now have a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.

Do Physical Therapists have specialization like Physicians?

  • Yes they do. There are a number of specialty certifications that can be earned in Physical Therapy including Board Certified Physical Therapist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS).
  • At RehabAuthority our physical therapists are required to have certifications in a number of different treatment methods. We want our patients to consistently receive the highest level of Physical Therapy care regardless of which RehabAuthority clinic they choose.
